BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that occurs in premature infants, which can lead to blindness in severe cases. The window period of ROP is short, and effective prevention and treatment can be achieved by early screening and early detection.
ROP is the top cause of blindness in children in developed countries. According to epidemiological data, 4-6 million children are blind due to ROP every year, accounting for 20% of preschool children' s blindness.
WHO pays close attention to the health and socio-economic issues brought about by preterm birth globally, and pointed out that the screening and prevention of a series of organ damages caused by preterm birth are crucial.
There are 17 million newborns each year in China, with a premature delivery rate of 10%. Among children with a birth weight of less than 1251g, 65.8% have different manifestations of ROP; for babies with a birth weight of less than 750g, the incidence of ROP is as high as 90%; according to the analysis of gestational age, the incidence of ROP in infants with gestational age bigger than 31W was 30%; the incidence of ROP in infants with gestational age less than 28W was 83%;
ROP is treatable, and more than 90% of children with ROP can be treated to preserve their vision. The premise is active screening for early detection. At present, the cure rate of ROP in developed countries has reached more than 95%, and its incidence is only one percent of China.
